How to Play the Musical Spoons (Tutorial)

Musical spoons are a simple but expressive percussion instrument with deep roots in folk traditions around the world. Using just a pair of wooden spoons and your hands, you can create crisp rhythms, rolling textures, and lively accents that work equally well in solo playing or group music. This guide introduces the fundamental techniques used to play musical spoons, focusing on relaxed movement, sound control, and rhythm rather than speed or showmanship.

What Are Musical Spoons?

Musical spoons are typically made from hardwood such as maple and are played by striking them together against the body or hand. They are especially common in folk music traditions across North America, Europe, and beyond. The sound is created by controlled movement rather than force, which makes them accessible to beginners while still offering a surprising amount of rhythmic depth.

How to Hold the Spoons

To begin, place your index finger between the handles of the two spoons so they sit comfortably together. Your thumb rests on top, securing them in place, while the rest of your hand stays relaxed. Bring the spoons over your leg and hold your hand roughly four to six inches above the surface. A loose wrist is essential—tension will limit both speed and tone.

The Basic Playing Motion

The foundational movement involves gently rocking your wrist so the spoons tap between your leg and your hand. Start slowly, allowing the spoons to rebound naturally rather than forcing the sound. Once this motion feels comfortable, you can vary the rhythm by changing the direction and timing of the movement, creating patterns such as down-down-up. This alternating motion forms the basis of most spoon rhythms.

Controlling Rhythm and Feel

As you gain confidence, focus on consistency rather than volume. Musical spoons respond best to controlled, even movement. Small adjustments in wrist angle and speed will change the tone and texture of the sound, allowing you to play tighter rhythms or more relaxed, rolling patterns depending on the style of music.

The Glide Technique

One of the most recognisable spoon techniques is the glide. To perform it, spread the fingers of your free hand wide and keep them firm and straight. Angle the bottom tips of the spoons toward your fingers and gently slide them downward across the knuckles. This produces a fast, fluttering effect that adds energy and variation to your playing. For the glide to work properly, your fingers must stay stiff—soft or bent fingers will stop the spoons from bouncing cleanly.

Combining Techniques

After practicing the glide on its own, you can combine it with the basic leg-and-hand motion. Many players finish a glide by striking the spoons back onto the leg, creating a clear rhythmic accent. Blending these techniques allows you to move smoothly between steady rhythms and decorative flourishes.

Developing Your Playing

Like any percussion instrument, musical spoons improve with regular practice. Short, relaxed sessions are more effective than forcing speed or volume. As your control improves, you’ll naturally develop timing, coordination, and rhythmic confidence, making the spoons a powerful addition to folk music, acoustic sessions, and rhythm-based performances.
