Famous Musical instruments in Indian Mythology

Indian mythology has many symbolisms and music plays a central role in its stories. Various musical instruments are not just tools of melody but are deeply connected with symbolising wisdom, power, and spiritual harmony. We are going to explore the most famous musical instruments in Indian mythology. To name a few, we are going to be looking at the Veena, Damaru, Bansuri Flute, Mridangam, Shankha Conch, Dundubhi, and Narada's Tambura. 

1. Veena

The veena is a stringed musical instrument that is closesly connected to Saraswati which is the Hindu godess of knowledge music and the arts. This godess is sometimes depicted holding the Kachhapi veena and is used to symbolsie wisdom and intellect. The veena is beleived to produce melodies that uphold dharma and cosmic order. The instrument is also played by the Celestial sage Narada.

2. Damaru

The damaru is a small hourglass-shaped two-headed drum that is deeply connected to Lord Shiva and is often reffered to as the first source of sound in the universe. The instrument is always seen in Lord Shivas hand during the Tandava dance which is said to echo the cycle of creation and destruction.

3. Flute(Bansuri)

The Bansuri bamboo flute is a musical instrument that is connected to Lord Krishna and is believe to symbolise love and spirutuality. Krishna is often depicted playing the flute.

4. Mridangam / Mardala

The Mridangam is a two-sided drum that is closely associated with the Gandharvas and sometimes Lord Ganesha. The instrument is featured in classical indian music and is loved for its rhythmic versatility. It is believed to be palyed during special events and dances. 

5. Conch (Shankha)

Shankha shell instrument

Panchajanya is the conch of Lord Vishnu and whilst it is not considered to be a traditional musical instrument, it is blown like a trumpet and produces a powerful sound. The conch symbolises the sacred om sound and represents the cosmic vibrations of the universe.

6. Dundubhi (War Drum)

Dundubhi war drum

The war drum is often associated with gods like Indra and Kartikeya. It is not seen as just a musical instrument but as a symbol of divine authority. The powerful muscial instrument is used to signal the commencement of battle and plays a role in mytholigical battles. It is believed that the sound invokes fear in enemies giving power to those that play it. 

7. Narada’s Tambura

Narada’s Tambura instrument

The tambura is a a long-necked stringed instrument that is similar to the veena or tanpura. Its linked to the Sage Narada which is a devoted follower of Vishnu. The Tambure represents spirutal dedication.
