Washable Sanitary Towel Period Pad Liner

If you're someone who gets periods, you're probably familiar with disposable pads. They're something that have been around for years, but what many people don't realise is how bad they are for the environment. After 14 years of using disposable pads, I decided to make a change and try reusable, washable pads. There are many products on the market, but I opted for the thickest, maxi-sized pad, which is similar to a nighttime pad.

These pads are simple to use and can last up to 4 to 5 hours, depending on your flow. They have great absorbency and are very comfortable. I purchased a pack of seven from Amazon and was worried about leaking at night, so I placed a towel underneath me just in case. However, I didn't need it. Disposable pads can cause irritation and are often scented, which is not good for you. Reusable pads are made from bamboo, although it can be challenging to find 100% cotton ones that are maxi size.

When going out, be sure to bring a bag to store the used pad until you can wash it at home. It's not hygienic to wash them in public bathrooms. On hot days, the pads may not be the best option, but they're a lot more absorbent than disposable pads. With disposable pads, I would go through a ten-pack a day because my periods are so heavy. With reusable pads, I can use them less during the day. I'm glad I don't have to buy pads anymore. Washable period pads are better for the environment, better for your health, and in the long run, better for your wallet. You can reuse these pads, and they can last for several years or more.

How to use washable sanitary pads

Washable sanitary pads can be used in the same way as disposable pads. By following these steps, you can use washable sanitary pads as an eco-friendly and cost-effective alternative to disposable pads.

  1. Start by choosing the appropriate size and absorbency level for your needs. Most washable sanitary pads come in different sizes and absorbencies, so you can choose the one that suits you best.
  2. Once you have chosen the pad, place it into your underwear with the absorbent side facing up.
  3. Adjust the pad to ensure that it covers your vaginal opening and that it is comfortable.
  4. Fasten the wings of the pad around the bottom of your underwear to secure it in place.
  5. Change the pad every four to six hours, or more frequently if needed.
  6. After use, rinse the pad with cold water to remove any excess blood.
  7. You can then hand wash the pad using mild detergent and warm water. Alternatively, you can machine wash the pad on a gentle cycle.
  8. Hang the pad to dry or tumble dry on a low setting.
  9. Once the pad is dry, fold it and store it in a clean, dry place until your next use.

How to wash reusable sanitary products?

Washing the pads is easy, take the pad off and place it in a sink with cold water for 20 minutes to an hour. Squeeze the pad out, add more fresh cold water, and it should remove the blood. Then, add it to your usual washing cycle. While there may be some slight staining on the lighter-coloured pads, the darker ones are better.

How to make washable sanitary pads?

Making your own washable sanitary pads can be a simple and cost-effective alternative to purchasing them. To make a basic washable pad you will need these materials: flannel or cotton fabric for the top and bottom layer, absorbent material such as cotton batting or microfibre, snaps or velcro for securing the pad and a sewing machine or needle and thread. By following these steps, you can make your own washable sanitary pads at home. You can also customise the size, fabric, and absorbency to your own preferences.

  1. Cut out two rectangles of your top and bottom layer fabric to your desired size. The average size is around 9 inches by 7 inches.
  2. Cut out one rectangle of your absorbent material to the same size as your top and bottom layers.
  3. Place the absorbent material between the two layers of fabric with the absorbent side facing up.
  4. Pin the layers together and sew around the edges, leaving a small opening to turn the pad right side out.
  5. Turn the pad right side out and sew the opening closed.
  6. Add snaps or velcro to the wings of the pad for securing it to your underwear.
  7. Once the pad is complete, it can be washed and dried like any other clothing item.

The best reusable sanitary pads

When choosing a reusable sanitary pad, it's important to consider factors such as comfort, absorbency, durability, and ease of use. It's also important to properly care for the pads by washing and drying them according to the manufacturer's instructions.
