Types of contraception to prevent pregnancy

Some of these will help with regulating or preventing periods and stopping the chances of pregnancy.

Implant

The contraceptive implant is an medical device that is implantable in the arm, used for the purpose of birth control. Side effects of the implant can include:

  • Irregular menstrual bleeding
  • Weight gain
  • Mood swings and other hormonal mood changes
  • Nausea / abdominal pain
  • Acne
  • Dizziness

Injection

The contraceptive injection is an injection of hormones in the muscle of your bottom and in some cases your arm muscle, you get it done every 12 weeks. Once they have given you the shot it can not be removed as it enters your blood stream so think about this one before getting it done. The injection however is 99% effective on stopping the chances of pregnancy which is a very reliable source of contraception. Side effects of the contraception injection

  • Headache
  • Acne
  • Vaginal discharge
  • Changes affecting mood and sex drive
  • Thinning of the bones
  • Spotting between periods and irregular bleeding

Combined pill

The combined pill is a hormone pill that is taken every day for 21 days, and stopped for 7 days to have your period, however you can continue taking the pills from another pack and take them until you are ready to have your period. Side effects of the combined pill

  • Blood clots
  • Headaches
  • Bloating
  • Lowered sex drive
  • Breast tenderness
  • Nausea (which should only last up to three months)
  • Mood swings

These are not the only types of contraception, just the ones that can be used to help or stop periods, but you can talk to your local GP or a contraceptive nurse and they can talk you through the types of contraception available.
